Time to talk about M&M's!!! Forrest Mars, Sr., founder of the Mars Company, got the idea for the confection in the 1930s during the Spanish Civil War when he saw soldiers eating chocolate pellets with a hard shell surrounding the inside, preventing them from melting. These chocolate candies with a crunchy sugar shell were initially introduced to American GIs serving in WWII in 1941. They were originally sold in a tube and were not produced in the brown bag we know until 1948. M&Ms candies were first printed with an M in 1950. The no-longer-used marketing line at this time was "melts in your mouth, not your hands." The colors red, yellow, and green weren't added until 1960, with orange coming in 76', and blue joining the crew in 95'. Today they're are many more color and flavors to choose from, my favorite being of course Peanut Butter! And today I tried the coconut version for the first time. As my mom put it, the executed the flavor quite well! The candies themselves seemed a little larger than the regular-sized M&Ms but not quite as large as the peanut butter ones. I don't think there were any actual shavings of coconut but the candies had a lovely coconut essence. Let's take some time to name the other flavors.
